The Tigress of Futan: Matriculation | Smut Vault Review

April Garrus continues to knock it out of the park with the fourth installment in the Tigress of Futan series – Matriculation. This time around, Zorah and Jül have made their way to Academy Balthazar to learn the ways of the Pathfinders. Their guide, a sexy horned devilish woman named Tachynka, leads them through the deadly school…and leads them into some sensual experiences, too.

Now, I wouldn’t really recommend this if you haven’t already read the first three. If you haven’t read any of the previous short stories about Zorah the “fiery Futanari” yet, hopefully this review will convince you to check them out. We’ve reviewed ‘em all so far, and both Matt and I have hyped them up. The setting is genuinely immersive, and the fourth entry does a really great job of building upon the relationship between Zorah and Jül that was beginning to blossom in the last book.

Readers may recall that Jül specifically told Zorah that she was not interested in “sex stuff” – at least, not the traditional penetrative sex stuff. The two have been jerking off together (and using telepathy to sneak each other sexy thoughts!), but Jülis strictly against going all the way. Her culture approaches sex and love much differently than the horndog Zorah does. This withdrawal has made Zorah quite sexually frustrated – she finds herself glancing at sci-fi co-eds in the shower and, of course, ogling their sexy new guide Tachynka. Though the story is only around forty pages long, it’s forty pages of slow burning desire that culminates in a very satisfying conclusion.

I have to take a moment here to hype up the innovations that sci-fi erotica present. Like, remember that telepathic sexy stuff I mentioned? There’s a lot more of it in this book then there was in the third, and it really adds an exciting element to the sex scenes. Think of it like dirty talk, but times one thousand because they can beam images and fantasies into the others’ mind. The telepathy also helps to accentuate the connection between those having sex, which helps with the actual romance element. If characters are literally linking up with their partners mentally, you can clearly get the sense of the trust and chemistry between them.

Without spoiling too much, the book also presents an interesting take on, uh, cum. Since the people in this world include dragons and lizards and other otherworldly creatures, it makes sense that there would be some mystic properties to their ejaculations. Never have I ever read a story where a character’s cum was pink and fiery, and I must admit that I was impressed by the world-building element that a character CUMMING was able to present. Plus, it was (literally) hot.

It’s not all just hardcore fuckin’ around these parts, though. The thing that really makes the sexy bits sell in this series (and in all of April Garrus’ works, really) is that the characters are genuinely well-developed. They have excellent chemistry, and there’s even a bit of real emotional deliberation about their sex lives. It’s not often an erotica introduces actual relationship drama about sexual insecurity or hesitation, but Tigress of Futanpulls these elements off well. Most impressively, it pulls it off without losing any of the steam built up from the sensual parts.

Verdict: The Tigress of Futan series is full of sexy surprises. Not only is it bursting with eroticism, but it also builds a genuinely fascinating world. The characters are fully developed, and it’s fun to see the stubborn Zorah grow and even get knocked down a few pegs during combat training. While the sci-fi element might be hit or miss with some, the setting and the different races in the story add a whole new layer of passion to the romance. The bite-sized shorts also help ease the reader into the vast world. Fans of the series will be excited to see where the story is heading here, and to newcomers, I can tell you that four books later, Tigress of Futan hasn’t run out of steam.
