Welcome back to the Smut Vault! This week’s contribution is a change of pace for a writer that’s graced the musty walls of this sex dungeon before. Sometimes erotica can have a more emotional edge than we’re comfortable with. Even the most guilty pleasures of sex can lead to good and bad feelings, so it’s important to examine what happens when one of these relationships has to end. Have the tissues on standby, we’re going to moisten things a bit more than the usual business today…

Can I Say Goodbye by The Secret Submissive is a short story about what happens when a forbidden relationship has to end. If you’ve read anything by this author before, you may be familiar with their themes of secret affairs and relationships that aren’t fit for public consumption. Our unnamed female character is taking a reflective trip to places that remind her of the relationship she had with Sir. Facing reminders with every passing landmark the submissive thinks back to the happier times she shared with her caring owner.

There’s a clear feeling of autobiography coming from the author. While not wholly exact to be sure, the emotion displayed by the Sub is one of pure grief that’s only quelled by the memory of just how hot and sexy the time with her Sir truly was. The erotica elements are intense and romantic, and in any other context would be a perfectly suitable piece of standard smut. There’s a plentiful feeling of fuzzy memories, but the dread is circling in the background that hits the reader with a final shot just before the brief story’s closing. The Sub is without direction and missing a piece of her soul after this relationship ends, but was it worth it to have the memories?

Verdict: Can I Say Goodbye by The Secret Submissive is a heart wrenching short story that carefully examines the emotional side of a bdsm relationship that has reached its conclusion. While the main theme isn’t the sex, the memories explored by the author are just as enjoyable in this context than in any other bdsm work of its kind. The level of humanity displayed both by the character and the demise of the relationship itself is worth the price of admission alone. Moreover, the final exposition is a last straw gut punch that’s sure to cause the reader to take pause no matter their sexual preferences. This story is for the forgotten people, the ones that slip through the cracks when forbidden romances have to stop. In the end we’re all just people, and this short story helps me remember that. Well done.
