Alias Mr. Big | Matt’s Smut Vault

Welcome back to the Smut Vault time machine! Today’s edition is another trip back in time, and while we’re at it, we’ll have the chance to re-examine a character. How often do we get the chance to meet a character all over again, but in a new story? We’ve met today’s subject a few weeks ago here inside the Vault, but now there’s a new author, and possibly even a new universe itself. Much like Detective Munch of Law & Order fame, today’s character might be some kind of universe-hopping dimension jumper. I’m all for it, so let’s dig in and see how the speakeasy magnate handles business with a new author at the helm. Polish the barrel of my Tommy Gun, it’s time for a swinging Smut Vault party!

Alias Mr. Big by Wayne Clingman is a fresh interpretation of a character who plays by his own rules and gets what he wants. Mr. Big runs the big city prohibition era booze racket, but also has a few side ventures as well that we’ll examine over the course of several chapter “scenes.” We first meet Big in his office as he’s opining on his passion for the flesh, particularly for a saucy little dame that has come strutting in unannounced. The young firebrand is here to find a way to pay off her husband’s debts, and Mr. Big isn’t going to be a man to mince words to either the reader or any character in his presence. You surely know what’s coming next, but it’s really important to consider Mr. Big’s dialogue.

No, like for real, he’s got no filter.

Holy shit Big what the hell is going on?!

…alright, so Mr. Big’s antics aren’t going to win any high manners honors, but he’s certainly not after them in the first place. Mr. Big walks us through about a half dozen scenes, that while all benefiting the same Big man, they each show some range in sexual content. Running down the list we get hand play, oral, MMF, quid pro quo intercourse, a dash of lesbian play, and…one other moment we need to touch on. For the lion’s share of the story, the sexual exploits were packed full of steam, and yet it manages to be kept light hearted by all the old-timey lingo that thoroughly saturates every interaction. All of this works just fine, that is, until the final scene. The author decides to take a chance with the last piece, exploring some non consenting peril that eventually turns into some post-abduction semi-consenting BDSM. I truly believe in the effort here, and I’d be hypocritical to dismiss the content based on other works that walk the line in this area. I think my only trouble is the near comedic whimsy which I held for the rest of the story. With the “dames, rooting, and mattress jigs” I forgot that we’re dealing with a character who’s more often than not breaking the rules, and isn’t someone to look up to as a moral compass. Any concerns with the finale were quickly dashed however but discovering the detailed glossary that explains all that crazy jargon we just read about…and perhaps more importantly some musings from the author about character and setting design. I’ve never had an author take a page and a half to explain their debate for a character potentially having their foreskin, but I feel like I’m a better man for it now.

Study guide for the Smut Vault SATs

Verdict: Alias Mr. Big by Wayne Clingman is a clever interpretation of a prohibition era erotica which covers a lot of ground, despite all of it being in the best interest of the big shot main character. The sexual selections over the six unique mini-stories will include something for everyone to enjoy…but by the same token it also invariably means it will include something you don’t. If you can see beyond Mr. Big’s rough and tumble sexual energy, the set dressing and background research truly help sell the setting for the roaring 20’s coming into their prime. While Gatsby himself had his eyes set for just one woman, I’ll side with Mr. Big for my money…it looks like he has more fun.
