Dirty Dom | Matt’s Smut Vault

It’s the sweetest of guilty pleasures to see someone cross over to the one true dark side. For today’s special edition of the Smut Vault, we welcome an author who’s been with us over in the better lit section of the TehBen.com Book Club. But with a new piece dropping today, we’re happy to accommodate her over here in the section without the slightest shred of shame. The subject on the docket involves encountering a partner they originally met online, in person for the first time, which is a growing trend over here in vault-land. Countless people are dating, finding love, or um.. screwing like rabbits via the powers of the Internet, and it’s natural that this sort of thing is finding its way to our books and e-readers as well. With the expanse of online dating, so comes the specialization of its kinks. Fantasy derived from identifiable origins, how could we go wrong? Hard limits on standby, let’s dig into what happens when a dark romance author takes on a new challenge, one that lays beyond the double steel doors of THE VAULT.

Dirty Dom by Sarah Bailey is billed as “erotic romance” and while her stories are consistently full of steam, this is the first such foray into erotica-leaning stories by the accomplished author of dark romance tales. For a change, Ms. Bailey is keeping the dungeons and blood contracts away from her “book kids” and presents an even more identifiable story than usual. Clara Anderson is a woman looking for love. Her brand of preferred love won’t come from roses and sweet serenades, as she needs a man with a more “hands-on” approach.

Clara has been weighed down by her fantasy: the need to truly feel “claimed” by a male partner. Not with the cage, but with the mind, and she hopes that somewhere out there lies a man who can take control without making her uncomfortable. Where would one go to find this perfect blend of masculine force tempered with good natured compassion? Why, the Internet of course! Taking to an unspecified kink dating site, Clara lays out her profile with the longshot dream of finding what would truly make her happy. After sifting through the countless “hey beautifuls” and “send 2 me dirty panties u slut” messages she eventually comes across a man’s profile surely too good to be true. Dominic, first known by his account name “Dirty Dom” is drop dead gorgeous but there’s no way a guy like that can expand her sexual horizons to hold her proverbial leash… or can he? Dom seems more than up to the task, and within a few short weeks Clara is venturing out to his place for a night of (in their words) “no holes barred” dominance and submission. The one catch, the rules state nothing can happen between them beyond this 24 hour visit, as Dom never looks to get too attached. Maybe the worst thing that could happen would be for these two to have the time of their lives…

One of Sarah Bailey’s strongest writing strengths (across the board in all of her previous works) has been pacing. Her ability to get a deep story on the page without an unnecessary waste of words is even more magnified in a compact story. Most of the proceedings are told through the back and forth perspective of the 24 hour visit at Dom’s place, with the ample amount of sex scenes that one would come to expect. What’s unique to contemporaries of this genre are the flash backs. Rather than downtime or forced development between orgasms, flashbacks to the online and telephone portions of their budding relationship are examined to help bring the reader into the same shared moment. This not only builds tension to the desires of the couple, but mixes seamlessly with the near-constant sex scene that this 24 hour visit entails. The sex, by the way, is brilliant and dirty, but not nearly as BDSM-involved as either the couple or reader might be expecting. Dom and Clara feel a little more mushy love for each other than a single, one dimensional night of “sir’n’spank’me” can comfortably provide. The dynamite sex leads to questions about the future of this pair, and there’s even some rudimentary dark elements sprinkled in regarding the character’s personal lives. If anything, the whole event feels more realistic than most stories in this genre. We might talk a big dirty nasty game about out need to please or our need to control…but we’re all just chasing that HEA, right?

Verdict: Dirty Dom by Sarah Bailey is an exciting erotic romance that has a lot of story to tell for a relatively brief sexual encounter. Clara and Dominic’s experience with BDSM may have been low on the physical intensity, but the mental submission and careful consideration of its participants make this story a must read for those interested in this lifestyle. Combined with the brief suggestion of dark romance, this novella can serve as appetizer to the world of Sarah Bailey’s more…dusky novels. Be sure to check your messages often, you never know when something special might be reaching out.

Special thanks to Sarah Bailey for providing an advance review copy of Dirty Dom to TehBen.com for review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
