Matt’s Smut Vault: Friends to Lovers

This edition of the Smut Vault turns the proverbial camera on itself and takes a look within. Not to ourselves, mind you, but to the erotica community itself. The erotica writers guild is a fun group of folk, and I highly suggest you do a hashtag search on Twitter to make a few new friends who know a thing or two about a good time. A concept that’s uncommon in erotica is the “co-written” love story. Our authors this week might be taking erotica in a new direction, but it won’t make much sense in the larger picture until we dig in. Will this smutty duet lead to double the pleasure? Let’s step through the double steel doors of the vault and see what this #lesfic has to offer.

Friends to Lovers: Sorcha & Aimee’s First Time by Aimee Maroux and Sorcha Rowan is a fanfiction of sorts. When we were provided this copy, we didn’t do any research on it beforehand (as we normally prefer to go in blind). It wasn’t until page one that we noticed something very peculiar (forgive us). “Hey wait…the people in the book have the same names as the people that wrote it!” While the story doesn’t claim to be autobiographical, the characters of Aimee and Sorcha are VERY identifiable with the authors. In the short piece, Aimee has flown to America from Europe to visit Sorcha for the first time, with very steamy intentions on their itinerary. While cultivating an online friendship, the two uniquely sexualized characters have been planning this trip for quite some time. More to the point, they’ve almost spent even longer planning on what they’re going to do to each other. As the pair leave the airport we learn Sorcha’s home is about two hours away…but maybe a nearby hotel will get things started faster…

From stem to stern, this story is one helluva raunchy romp. The characters, surely not unlike the author’s real world counterparts, can’t wait another moment before getting sexy. Thankfully though, sexual tension is still allowed to build over the first part of the story. The dialogue is paced nicely, but far too many of the lines have a cliched feel to them. Granted, “fuck me like a dirty bitch” isn’t the most common line in literature, but it’s the other comments I’m referring to. The moments that didn’t require a sexual command, the sexual expressions of feeling, are a ping-pong of soft sweet friendship and rough verbal communication. While not a direct part of the content, the authors do a great job of referencing backstory…mostly through all the sexy trinkets and toys that Aimee brought along for the trip. It’s delightfully and painfully obvious that this was one HELL of an online relationship that’s finally being made flesh in this moment. Despite the proceedings, two people in a relatively small window of space and time, we’re provided a vast amount of varied sexual activity (the use of a switch role mechanic being one of my personal favorites).

Most story requirements are fulfilled, but what isn’t quite clear is the answer to “why?”. Was this trip meant to simply release their base need for physical intercourse? Was it to perhaps a venture into the next depths of a relationship? As is the case with many stories like this, the reader is granted just enough backstory to empathize with the notion that these characters SHOULD be sharing this together. What’s unfortunately missing is that last level of depth that can make a story like this sizzle even more. The ambiguity of the trip does allow the fans of each author to draw their own conclusions, but I’ve personally never been a supporter of that brand of teasing. There is an epilogue that assists with this slightly, however it’s really more intended as a fourth wall remover over an extra bit of story.

Verdict: Friends to Lovers: Sorcha & Aimee’s First Time gives their fans a front row seat to a red hot mutual exploration of their shared sexuality. Whether this is a true story, fictionalized exaggeration, or simply a open pen pal letter isn’t for me to speculate, but it’s lovely to see what these two real world authors might think of each other. Maybe this won’t satisfy your hunger as an erotica meal, but it’s still quite a spicy snack.
